Whipped Peter Tee
The scars on the back of Gordon, or "Whipped Peter," exposed the truth about the brutality of slavery. It had taken him months to recuperate from a heinous beating he suffered at the hands of an overseer. After he regained his strength, he escaped from the plantation and managed to reach a Union soldiers camp in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Many slavery sympathizers argued that slaves were being treated humanely. However, this image was shocking and appalling to many people across the country who had not seen slavery up close and personal. It helped fuel the abolitionist cause. Peter joined the military served in the fight against slavery. This pre-shrunk adult heavy cotton t-shirt has a classic cotton look and feel.
